#OrkSciFest livestreaming - Day 2

With most of the lecture events in the King Street Halls in Kirkwall, which does not have wifi, livestreaming was not really possible! However, bambuser allows the recording of material for later upload "as live", so that is what we did on Day 2.

One of the constraints on the feasibility of providing video content online is the upload speed of the broadband connection being used. Most traditional domestic broadband is asynchronous, and upload speeds are usually a very small fraction of the advertised download speeds of "up to" 8Mbps, or 20Mbps. One of the reasons that Kirkwall Town Hall is a very good venue from which to livestream is that the public wifi there is fast (10s of Mbps, provided as part of the Orkney Islands Council corporate network, using fibre to the premises), and synchronous, so we are able to broadcast good quality live video to the internet. But that was yesterday (as the song goes) ... Day 2 video was recorded, and uploaded from my home broadband at a painfully slow 0.4Mbps (roughly).
